Using the Correct Verb Tense – Classroom Posters

This set of simple, visual and bright classroom posters has been created by a teacher to help with the teaching and learning of using verbs in the correct tense when writing sentences. Teaching your students to use verbs in the correct tense is important to develop strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

The following content is included in these posters:

Past tense:

The event has already happened.
I looked at bugs in the park.

Present tense:

The event is happening now.
I’m looking for bugs in the park.

Future tense:

The event is going to happen.
I will look for bugs tomorrow.

Tips for Teaching Kids Correct Verb Tense Usage

Looking for some more activities to help kids understand verb tense? Here are some suggestions:

  1. Make sure you start with simple present, past and future tense. For example – Present: I play, Past: I played and Future: I will play.
  2. Introduce time markers to your students. Use words like ‘yesterday’, ‘today’, and ‘tomorrow’. For example – I played soccer, I play soccer and I will play soccer.
  3. Practice with real-life scenarios, when kids talk about their daily routines, past or future events they are then encouraged to use the correct tense.
  4. Mark events on a timeline and have kids describe them using the correct tense.
