Are you looking for a student-centered activity to help your students learn some common CVC, CVCC and CCVC words? Move over Hangman, it’s time to play Beat the Blast Off!
This partner game is a twist on the old game of Hangman. Instead of using a poor soul about to meet their demise, this game uses the more modern concept of a rocket ship about to take off! The aim of the game is for students to guess the word by asking what letters it contains before the completed rocket ship is drawn.
Here’s how to play:
- Player 1 (the cardholder) chooses a word card or another CVC, CVCC or CCVC word of their own choosing.
- Player 2 (the word guesser) tries to guess the word by suggesting letters, one at a time.
- Player 2 may guess the whole word at any time. If the word is correct, the game is over and that player wins.
- Each time Player 2 makes an incorrect letter guess, Player 1 draws the next part of the rocket diagram.
- If Player 2 reaches 10 incorrect guesses, the rocket ship is completed and blasts off! In these cases, Player 1 wins the game.
