Roll to Create a Magical Story

Are you looking for a student-centred activity to help your students unleash their inner author? Look no further than Teach Starter’s Roll to Create a Magical Story dice game!

This game is a fun and engaging way to get your students’ imaginations flowing and inspire new ideas for a magical story. The dice game adds an element of chance to the activity, making any number of combinations possible regarding settings, characters and magical objects.

The game features three differentiated versions: a pictures-only version, a words-and-pictures version and a words-only version. We recommend choosing the version that best meets the needs of your class or individual students.

Read on to learn how to play this “Roll to Create” game with your students! 

How to Play This “Roll to Create” Dice Game

To get your students to create magical stories, simply follow the steps below!

  1. First Roll: Setting – Students roll the dice to establish the setting of their story. There are six settings: castle, beach, mountains, forest, another planet and the circus. Once the students have found the setting that matches the number rolled, they record the setting on their worksheet.
  2. Second Roll: Character – Students roll the dice to establish the main character of their story. There are six main characters: knight, witch, alien, wizard, elf and dragon. Once the students have found the character that matches the number rolled, they record the character on their worksheet.
  3. Third Roll: First Object – Students roll the dice to establish the first object to feature in their story. There are six objects: potion, magic wand, magic bag, mushrooms, spellbook and crystal ball. Once the students have found the object that matches the number rolled, they record the object on their worksheet.
  4. Fourth Roll: Second Object – Students roll the dice to establish the second object to feature in their story. There are six objects: crystals, broom, map, pestle and mortar, magic dice and secret door. Once the students have found the object that matches the number rolled, they record the object on their worksheet.
  5. Writing Time! – Students write a magical story based around the setting, character and two objects that matched their dice rolls. A sheet has been provided within the resource; however, older students will likely need a lot more space to write their stories!
